Junior Sports Star: Fired up for futsal
Soccer

Abbotsford teenager Carla Canini is blazing the trail for her generation of female soccer players.

This week’s Inner West Courier Junior Sports Star nominee has played outdoor soccer since she was six years old and the indoor form of the game since she was nine.

She has appeared in a raft of grand finals with Marconi, Inter Lion and regional representative teams – in many of them as captain.

It is indoor soccer or futsal, however, where Canini has really made her name.

“It’s a better game,” she said.

“The way I play suits indoor more than outdoor.”

At nine years old, Canini was the only girl in her under-12 futsal team and one of only three girls in the entire league.

She started on the bench but was in the starting line up by the end of the season.

Canini was the captain and most valuable player of the under-14s NSW girls team that won the Futsal National Championship last year.

She won the tournament again with the under-16s NSW team this year.

Her dream is to play for the Australian women’s futsal team.

“Hopefully play professionally and get paid for it,” Canini said.
