Futsal champs love the beautiful game

31 Aug, 2011

ROBERT Townson High School's open boys' futsal team are this year's NSW School State Futsal champions, after a 3-1 victory over East Hills.

The school conducts a successful soccer development program as an elective in years 9 and 10 .

Teams have performed well in indoor and outdoor arenas, consistently qualifying for the state championships.

Ned Kelava, the school's football development co-ordinator, is experienced in youth coaching at the highest level. He is a former head coach at Football NSW.

Kelava said the school's recent success can be directly attributed to the football development elective. "The students love the course, are highly motivated to participate and learn in all aspects of the beautiful game," he said.

"Effective education revolves around providing the students with a positive learning environment, combine this with a genuine interest in the particular sport and you have a recipe for success.

"It's an absolute pleasure to see these boys play, throughout the tournaments, the boys played an attractive, technical and well-organised style of football.

"It's nice to see the principles and methodology learnt during the course being applied in competitive game situations."
