Saudi Arabia stay unbeaten in GCC futsal event

Manama, Sept. 12 (BNA) -- Saudi Arabia stretched their winning run in the Fifth GCC Futsal Championship for the Hearing Impaired, being held at Khalifa Sports City's gym in Isa Town.

The defending champions outplayed Oman 8-3 for their second successive victory in this five-team round robin competition.

On the second day of the tournament, the Saudis put up a spirited show to remain undefeated after two games. The victors now lead the championship with six point.

Mohammed Al Shammiri and Majid Al Asmari fired a hat-trick each in Saudi Arabia's emphatic win, while Hamad Al Amri and Abdulmajeed Jawadi (2 each) were also on target for the victors.

Oman, who played their first game in the tournament, were unable to match the strength and high pace of their opponents. Their goals were scored by Hassan Al Ghamdi, Ghalib Al Thaibani and Abdulla Al Shiri.

In another match, the UAE held Kuwait to an exciting 7-7 draw. Scoring for Kuwait, who claimed a 3-1 lead at half-time, were Ahmed Al Otaibi (3 goals), Mohammed Al Shammari (2), Hussain Al Ajmi and Mohammed Al Ajmi.

Oman revive GCC futsal title hopes

BAHRAIN's chances of winning their first-ever GCC Futsal Championship for the Hearing Impaired vanished yesterday after suffering an emphatic 1-11 loss to Oman.

In a one-sided encounter, held at Khalifa Sports City's gym in Isa Town, the home team, suffered their second straight defeat, having lost their opener 2-8 to title holders Saudi Arabia.

Bahrain, whose only goal was scored by Sayed Isa Al Wedaie, remained at the bottom of this five-team championship with no points after two matches and are yet to look for their maiden victory.

Oman, who were held to a 3-3 draw by Kuwait before going down to the Saudis 3-8 in their second game, revived their title hopes with two matches in hand.

Hussain Al Ajmi was the top scorer for the victors in yesterday's game, scoring five goals and guiding his country its first victory.

He was assisted by Ala'a Al Rayyani, who bagged four goals, while Khalid Al Otaibi and Ahmed Al Otaibi claimed one goal each.

The Omanis now moved into second place in this single round robin championship. They are on four points from two matches, five points behind leaders Saudi Arabia.

The Saudis, meanwhile, made it three wins in as many games with a comfortable 12-0 victory over the UAE to inch closer towards retaining the title won in the previous edition cup in 2004.

The defending champions, who registered successive resounding wins over Bahrain 8-2 and Oman 8-3, maintained their impressive form yesterday in bid to keep the title.

The team in green and white jerseys put up a spirited show to remain undefeated after three games.

Majid Al Asmari was the hero for Saudi Araiba yesterday with five goals. Other players on target were Hamad Al Amer (3 goals), Mohammed Al Shammari (2), Mohammed Al Suwadi and Abdulmajeed Al Jawadi (1 each).

The UAE, who held Kuwait to a thrilling 7-7 draw in their opener, were handed their first defeat after two games and stayed on one point.

Tournament action continues tonight with two matches on the fourth and penultimate day when Bahrain play their third match against Kuwait at 4pm. It will be followed by Oman vs UAE clash at 5.30pm.

This five-day event will reach the final day tomorrow when Kuwait take on Saudi Arabia at 4pm, then Bahrain meet the UAE at 5.30pm. The prize-distribution ceremony will follow at 7pm.

The championship, which is the 44th event of the GCC Organising Committee for the Sports of the Disabled, is being organised jointly by the committee and the Bahrain Disabled Sports Federation (BDSF).

Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) and Bahrain Kuwait Insurance Company (BKIC) are supporting the event as gold and silver sponsors, respectively.

Other sponsors are Chevron Bahrain, Banagas, Bahrain National Insurance Company, Galaxy Travel and Tourism, Monroe Hotel.
