End of European road for Omonia in Futsal Cup

Omonia recorded two defeats in as many games in the UEFA Futsal Cup Main Round Group 6 on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, at the mini tournament taking place at the Jezero Sports Hall in the Serbian city of Kragujevac.

On the opening night Omonia lost to Ukrainian side Uragan Ivano-Frankovsk 6-4. The hosts, KMF Ekonomac Kragujevac, thereafter beat the Cypriot champions 5-1 on Wednesday to secure a spot in the competition’s next stage, while leaving the Nicosia team a chance to redeem themselves in the final game of the event against Israel’s Asa Ben Gurion tonight.

“Despite (offering) good resistance in the first half to a very strong Serbian team, fatigue betrayed Kyriakos Mavroudes and his players and they succumbed under the pressure to register a convincing defeat,” the club’s official web site stated.

“Our goal is to leave Serbia with our heads held high and we will do so if we beat Asa Ben-Gurion in tonight’s game ... our last game in the main round of the UEFA Futsal Cup for this season. Beating the Israelis could bring some points to our international rankings and help our teams in the future. Even now it is certain that next time we compete in Europe we will skip the preliminary round of the competition completely,” the statement concluded.

In tonight’s matches Omonia face Asa Ben-Gurion with the kick-off set for 6pm CET, while at 8.30pm Uragan Ivano-Frankovsk take on home team KMF Ekonomac Kragujevac in the battle for the top spot in Group 6.
