Courtesy: www.concacaf.comGuatemala travels to Malaysia this week for 2003 KL World 5’s Guatemala’s Futsal team will travel to Bukit Jalil Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 31 May to compete at the 2003 KL World 5’s from 3-8 June.
After several European nations withdrew from the futsal event, Guatemala along with Argentina, South Africa, Uzbekistan and Uruguay accepted the invitation to the 12-team tournament the 11th hour.
Guatemala's technical director Jose Venancio Lopez called in 15 players for training camp on 23 May and only 12 will make the traveling roster to Malaysia.
The chapines, who are in preparations for hosting the CONCACAF Futsal Championship next year, have been placed in Group C for the KL World 5’s and will face Uruguay on 4 June at 19:00 local time.
Guatemala ends group play with a match-up against the host Malaysia the next day at 21:00.
Recognized as one of the top international futsal competitions in the world, the KL World 5’s will feature a format that will have three finals (Cup, Plate and Bowl).
The event, which replaced the Singapore Tiger 5’s, will be held at Putra Indoor Stadium in Bukit Jalil, Malaysia with 12 nations divided into four groups of three for the opening round from 3-5 June.
Once the first round ends (5 June), the first-place group winners will advance to the semifinals of the “Cup” competition, while the second-place finishers meet in the “Plate” semifinals. The third-place teams’ advance to the semis of the “Bowl” competition.
All semifinal matches will be played from 6-7 June, with the winners playing in their respective competition finals (Cup, Plate and Bowl) on 8 June.
FIFA world champion Spain won the futsal event in 2001 (then Singapore Tiger 5’s) with a thrilling 4:3 penalty kick victory over Brazil in the finals on 3 December.
