U.S. Futsal National Team beaten by Iran 8-0 in Grand Prix

19 Oct, 2011

The U.S. Futsal National Team posted its second loss of the Futsal Grand Prix tournament in Manaus, Brazil, when the team fell 8-0 against Iran on Oct. 17.

The U.S. lost against Uruguay in the first match of Group C play on Oct. 16 and were unable to get on the scoreboard in both games. After Iran scored the opening goal at the 1:50 mark, the U.S. did well to prevent the No. 6 team in the world from adding to their lead for the next 15 minutes, until Iran doubled its score in the 17th minute.

The U.S. had its best chance in the tournament in the second half, when Jeremy Ortiz went one-on-one with Iran’s goalkeeper, but Mojtaba Nasirniaie Farouji made the save to protect Iran’s 5-0 lead and clean sheet.

U.S. Futsal National Team eliminated from Futsal Grand Prix following 10-7 loss to Belgium

20 Oct, 2011

The U.S. Futsal National Team fell 10-7 against Belgium on Oct. 18 in Manaus, Brazil. Though the U.S. recorded its best performance of the Futsal Grand Prix against Belgium, the seven goals were not enough to keep the team in the invitational competition.

The U.S. broke its duck in the third group game, posting a 2-0 lead in under five minutes. Kraig Chiles opened the U.S.’s scoring account at the 4:01 mark and added four of the U.S.’s seven goals of the match, including a shot just before the half that tied the score at 4-4.

After Chiles put the U.S. at a one-goal advantage at the 23:14 mark, Belgium ran away with the lead, tallying five unanswered goals to put Belgium up 9-5. Chiles netted his fourth of the match just before the final whistle with a penalty kick at 39:55.

Andre Vanderlei proved to be the powerhouse for Belgium, adding four of his side’s 10 goals in the game.
