The world game of football is big in Wellington and on any weekend more than 300 children play the sport in winter. Now its expanding to showcase the international game of Futsal.

Tireless organiser of local sport Marie Cornish said the inaugural Netball/Futsal high school to open age competition was due to commence last week but due to “no show” of participants it was decided to wait until Thursday November 3 after Year 10 and HSC students have finished their exams.

Hopefully on this night there will be plenty of action on the courts. This is a great sport for young people to play. It’s high-octane and active and so much fun. People will really enjoy this sport,” Ms Cornish said.

The sport is usually played indoors but because of the twilight conditions and more light and warmer weather, the Netball and Futsal officials are confident this can become a sport for all.

Its origins date back to the 1930’s in South America, the first world championships weren’t play till the 1980’s.

Australia’s women are actually in the top 10 of the sport’s rankings giving the opportunity for our kids to play the sport internationally and Wellington players have the skill because of their talents which have been on show each weekend at Pioneer Park.

Format is:

Teams are to be mixed with no more than 10 players (if you don’t have a team and wish to play please come along one will be found for you).

On the night you will get to participate in both sports.

Players not playing will be required to umpire

Cost:

$5 fee for those players already registered with either Netball NSW or Soccer NSW (receipt needs to be sighted) $30 for those players not registered.

Time:

6.30pm start, this week please be at courts by 6pm to assist setup and register.
