Wauchope GazetteDuo selected for Futsal honours16 Nov, 2011WAUCHOPE High School Year 7 student Georgia Williams, has been selected in the U/13 Australian Vikings Futsal team, to tour New Zealand in April and May 2012.
Georgia gained selection after playing for Northern NSW in the U/14 National School Futsal Championships held in Brisbane from 25th to 30th September 2011. Georgia was advised that she had been selected for the Australian team on her ability and exemplary performance that she displayed at the National Championships in Brisbane as a court player.
The Northern NSW team progressed to the Quarter finals, however were defeated in extra time by the local Brisbane side 4-3.
This was a great effort for the NSW team as they lost their star Goalkeeper, local girl Georgia White, in the prior match against Northern Queensland with a painful shoulder injury. Georgia White has also been selected as a Goalkeeper for the U/14 representative side to tour Spain next year.
Up until then, Northern NSW had the best defensive record in the National Championships. Unfortunately the team were unable to field a full strength side for the Quarter finals due to injuries. Northern Queensland went on to take the National Championships out undefeated.
The Northern NSW side were the only team to take points off the well tuned Northern Queensland team with a 3 - 3 draw.
The Northern Queensland Coach ,stated that the Northern New South Wales side were the team to beat after the 3 all draw, but unfortunately injuries to key players placed the side as an under strength side in the Quarter Final against the Brisbane team.
Georgia Williams was injured in an earlier match and was taken to the QE2 Hospital with a suspected fractured wrist.
X-rays revealed that there was no fracture but Doctors advised Georgia that she could not play Futsal and had to rest the severely strained wrist injury for 5 days.
Although in a lot of pain, Georgia decided not to adhere to medical advice and went on to play the final 4 games with her wrist heavily strapped, and was clearly determined not to let the side down.
Georgia Williams has been playing Football (Soccer) for Wauchope for the past 6 years and was a member of the U/14 Wauchope Bottlebrushes, who won both the "Mid North Coast Grand Final" and "Champion of Champions Finals" this year.
Georgia was presented with the "Players Player" award as the team's striker and top goal scorer this year. Georgia White was the Goalkeeper of the U/14 Wauchope Bottlebrushes and had a very successful year with the team
Georgia Williams started her Futsal career earlier this year in the U/13 & U/14 Wauchope High School Futsal teams.
It has been a great achievement for the 12 year old to be selected to represent Northern NSW and be competitive in the U/14 side. Playing up against older aged players is always a challenge for the younger players in any sport.
The tour to New Zealand will give Georgia the opportunity to compete with players in her own age group, gain invaluable experience, and commence a pathway to becoming a very competent and experienced Futsal player of the future.
Georgia Williams is very excited about the selection and is grateful for the opportunity to represent her country at such an early stage of her life. Georgia has achieved many accolades and has represented at State level in Touch Football, Soccer, Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country over the past 5 years.
