Jason BritschDecember 3, 2011Midland--"It started getting out there in the market, and we definitely think there's a market out here for it," said Vinson Brown, Marketing Director
Vinson Brown along with other organizers are in the process of making the sport Futsal, a namesake in west Texas.
"The whole idea was to bring a league to where they could compete against each other and stay fit, but most importantly during the winter months," said Carl Bussey, Futsal Director.
Futsal is a faster paced brand of soccer played indoors that allows players to focus on technique and decision-making during the three-month layover of winter.
"The idea is to keep kids active, to give them something to do in the winter when it gets cold, now they have something to stay active with," said Bussey.
"It gives them a conducive playing environment basically year round so they can continue playing as opposed to sitting off for three months, playing video game, watching tv or doing nothing," said Brown.
For anyone who knows about indoor soccer, Futsal should sound familiar. The biggest difference is no turf is involved and the entire game is played on a hard surface.
These Futsal pioneers say that having the game here will not only make them better players, but better teammates as well.
"It's great for us to stay in somewhat of a shape and play with our teammates and get more familiar with each other so we can have a better team over the following seasons," said Gary Willis, U.T.P.B. Soccer Player
"It's very much needed, we really don't have this out here, there's a lot of talent in Midland and Odessa and it would be great to see it all come into one league, creating better competition," said George Lara, West Texas Sockers Player.
