Bendigo AdvertiserCentral Victorian stars head to Futsal titles in national capitalby
Travis King14 Dec, 2011Seven stars from Football Federation Victoria central region clubs will represent Victoria at futsal after applying their talent with the round ball to the indoor version of the sport.
The Bendigo teenagers, all with previous experience at the National Futsal Championships, will head to Canberra to play in the under-19 tournament in January.
The Castlemaine, Strathdale and Colts United soccer club players have been travelling to Melbourne on weekends to train and are hoping to make a big impression at the 130-team tournament.
“We’re well prepared and we have a really strong team,” futsal team-member Michelle Duffy said.
“We know what it’s like, but we haven’t reached our full potential yet.”
Beginning as a social team, the girls found a natural flair for the game.
They have been working for months to continue to adapt from outdoor soccer to the faster, more skilful indoor sport.
The local team entered a tournament in Geelong, where it missed out on the final, but had standout players who tried out for the two Victorian teams.
The team is now looking for sponsors, who they will promote on their strip, to assist with funding the cost of the tournament.
Bendigo coach Peter Richardson will coach an under-13s team at the tournament which runs from January 9-13.
