Sunderland Women secure first ever win in Futsal

The University of Sunderland Women’s Futsal team recorded their first ever victory in the smaller-sided version of the game, but were brought back down to earth, losing their other three fixtures.

Sunderland travelled to York to compete in the second round of fixtures in the Northern Futsal League and the players made a remarkable improvement from the last round of fixtures, wherein they suffered four heavy defeats.

It was a different story this time round, as they secured an inaugural win and only lost by small margins in the other matches.

Laura Hockaday scored two of the team’s goals. The Wearsiders were cheered on by a bumper crowd and looked like a much better-equipped side.

They didn’t have the best start, however, as they were handed a 10-0 drubbing by Northumbria and then lost 2-0 to Leeds Met in a close-knit affair.

But, the next game against MMU Cheshire produced the long-awaited victory, as they recorded a 3-2 win with goals from Laura Hockaday, Cara Moran and Sarah Grahamslaw. The joy was there for all to see and the celebrations might have suggested they had won the entire tournament.

But the team’s elation didn’t last long as they were beaten 4-1 by Durham with Hockaday netting another goal.

After the tournament, Sunderland’s Sophie Fowdy said: “We played really well in the last three games considering the results of the last Futsal tournament.

“Overall it was an excellent effort and performance by all the girls.”
