Girls kicking away the winter blues

Tuesday, 31 January 2012

GIRLS from Barrow Celtic have blown away the winter blues by moving indoors as part of a new futsal scheme.

Teams from under-12s through to under-16s have been taking part in the South Lakes Girls League scheme in recent months to beat the weather, which has prevented many football games being played outdoors.

Events at Chetwynde School, in Barrow, and Dallam School, near Milnthorpe, have proved a big success, with Celtic joined by teams from Kendal and others in the South Lakes set-up and elsewhere.

Futsal, a variation of five-a-side football, is played on a smaller pitch and with a smaller ball, with less bounce than a regular football.

The rules put an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique as well as ball control and passing in small spaces.

Barrow Celtic coach Chris Jones said: “Barrow Celtic Girls will be looking at organising similar events in the future in a bid to encourage girls’ football in the local area.

“We hope girls of all ages and abilities will take part, either as part of a team, including school teams or clubs, or as an individual.

“We are presently in talks with Barrow Borough Council to assist as one of the venues taking part in the forthcoming women’s and girls’ event 2012, being organised by the council in July.”

The final futsal event of the winter will take place at Dallam School this Sunday, (February 5).
