Steep price to emphasise healthy living

by Tenzin Wangchuk

Nineteen teams are participating in the ongoing Winter Futsal championship organised to promote healthy living in the capital.

Open to all, irrespective of age, the championship that kicked off on February 3, brings together both youth and office-goers to face each other on the blacktopped parking lot outside the Chalimithang stadium.

Football enthusiasts and organisers Yeshey Gyaltshen and Karan Gurung of the Bhutan Football Federation said they had come up with this program, especially to keep the sport alive and at the same time keep the youth active during their holidays.

“For a guy bound to office work, such kind of activities leads to fitness and good health,” Kezang Wangchuk, a private employee playing for Android FC, said. He added that such initiatives by adults organising different sports tournaments could keep the youth busy and away from trouble. “Absence of such activities is a reason why crime cases involving youth are on the rise these days.”

A Yangchenphug school student Jigme Wangchuk said participating in such tournaments enhanced his skills.

Another student Pascal said he took part in the tournament, as Futsal was entertaining and a tournament, this time around was a good way to end his vacation.

Most students, however, said the entry fee of Nu 6,000 a team was a bit steep for students.

“Unlike office goers who can manage by themselves, we have difficult time finding sponsors,” he said. “I think more teams would have participated if the fees were lower,” Jigme Wangchuk said.

Two matches are played everyday during the weekdays and five during weekends.
