'We must maintain link,' stresses Selby

Wednesday, 08 February 2012

Kuala Lumpur: AFC Technical Director Jim Selby has stressed the importance of the strong bond between players, coaches and coaching instructors in all disciplines of the beautiful game in Asia.

Addressing the participants as the four-day AFC Elite Futsal Coaching Instructor Course got underway in the Malaysian capital on Wednesday Selby remarked:

"Talented players need good coaches and good coaches need expert instructors like you, so it's imperative that we do not break this link if we want to see Asian football soar higher.

"It's important that we work in our respective areas, be it futsal, beach football, or 11-a-side football, because put together, we are all working toward the betterment of Asian football."

The AFC Elite Futsal Coaching Instructor Course is part of the AFC Elite Education Seminar 2012, a month-long instructional and educational extravaganza that teaches participants the latest trends across numerous disciplines as well as allowing the sharing of knowledge and experience between those involved in the Asian game.

And it is this holistic approach that Selby believes should be embraced by all the participants when the return to their respective countries.

"We should not necessarily copy other people but instead modify what we have learned according to our own culture," the Australian said.

"Our culture influences our style of play, otherwise our football would be boring and we will be left behind.

"Take the good bits and modify them to suit your people or players and you will go ahead in the game."
