Red Sox loom as dark horses

11/02/2012

The Red Sox-Manawatu team are heading to the second round of the national futsal series in Auckland this weekend with high hopes.

The Red Sox had two wins, a draw, and a loss at the first round in Dunedin, and are looking to improve on that result.

Two players have been added to their squad. Ian Robinson and Dalin Wilson, two former YoungHeart Manawatu players, have joined the team travelling to Auckland, so there is a chance the team could live up to its tag of dark horses of the competition.

Greg O'Connor, who has played for the New Zealand team, is in the Red Sox side, and with four goals is the second-highest scorer in the series.

The Red Sox were to play NFF Massey, from Auckland, Capital Futsal (Wellington) and Central Hawke's Bay Futsal today and then heavyweights Auckland East City and Mainland Futsal (Canterbury) tomorrow.

In the first leg of the series, the Manawatu team beat NFF Massey and Hawke's Bay Futsal 4-3 and drew with Wellington, so they were targeting at least three wins for the weekend. Only one more round is left in the series, in Wellington next month.

Red Sox-Manawatu: Murray Burling, Ian Robinson, Dalin Wilson, Richard Wood, Khair Jones, Tyson Brandt, Jack Judd, Matthew Goldsworthy, Woody Maxey-Graham, Scott Mudgway, Greg O'Connor.
