Village futsal court in poor condition just two years after completion

February 12, 2012, Sunday

MIRI: The Kg Pulau Melayu futsal and multipurpose court is presently in a sorry state after its construction two years ago.
Piasau assemblyman Alan Ling Sie Kiong recently paid a visit to the facility, which was one of three proposed in July 2008 that included Tudan and Krokop (Jalan Bulatan) and funded by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

“I received complaints from one of the residents called Apoh about the sorry state of the court,” said Ling who after inspection noticed a broken gate, damaged fencing, and an out of order toilet facility.

“Problems like this will remain unresolved until highlighted, so I will be writing to the Ministry which built it,” he said.
The court is meant for local residents who only have to book the facility through their respective village development and safety committees (JKKK) if they had use for it.

“In view of its poor condition, I am considering getting the cooperation of volunteers and paying a gardener to clean up the facility, especially the thick bushes around it,” he added.
On Jan 29 two years ago, former Pujut assemblyman Andy Chia made a site inspection visit to the Krokop court, and had expressed disappointment in the quality of work done by the contractor.

The Krokop court has since been completed and is still in good condition, which is a sharp contrast to the Pulau Melayu court, which was built about the same time.

A futsal court in Kg Tanjong Batu, Padang Kerbau, Pujut also faced a similar fate when on Aug 15 last year, it was found to have been vandalised by people who sought to break into the facility, causing serious damage to the fencing. Kg Pulau Melayu is a village with about 1,000 residents, mostly Malays, situated on a small island across Miri River.
