Wales On LineEntries are being taken for Futsal CupFeb 15 2012THE second annual FAW Futsal Cup has been launched with applications now open for the national competition.
The inaugural FAW Futsal Cup last season saw 28 teams battle it out for a place in the final, with TNS defeating Gap Connah’s Quay to lift the silverware.
TNS also gained £1,500 in prize money and went on to represent Wales in the Uefa Futsal Cup in Geneva, Switzerland, in August, with the side bowing out against teams from the host city, Dublin and Lithuania.
“Last year’s competition was a fantastic start for Futsal in Wales. We didn’t expect the standard to be so high and as a result, many young Welsh players were identified in the FAW Futsal Cup and they are now involved in the international squad.” said FAW head of competitions, Andrew Howard.
“I am hoping that there will be more entries this season as its an excellent opportunity to not only showcase skills in the five-a-side game, but to also qualify for European football, which not many footballers will ever have the opportunity to do.”
Players can be registered if they are aged 16 or above.
Clubs can only nominate a squad of a maximum of 20 players. A maximum squad of 14 from that initial list can be used in each of the qualifying and final rounds.
As per Fifa rules, the FAW has a separate 11 a-side and futsal registration system, so a player can register for separate futsal and 11-a-side clubs.
A player can only be registered with one futsal team at the same time and international clearance is required if the player’s previous futsal club was outside Wales.
The southern regional qualifiers are in Cardiff on Sunday, April 1 where 12 teams will compete in three groups of four.
The champions of each group will progress to the finals.
There will be a preliminary round on Sunday, March 25 if more than 12 entries in the south are received.
The overall winners this season will represent Wales in the Uefa Futsal Cup.
