ECFC holds open evening for Futsal Scholarship

21/02/2012

Exeter City Football Club is holding an open evening for Year 11 and 12 students in Exeter to find out about its Futsal Scholarship course.

The Futsal Scholarship is a full-time, two-year BTEC programme, which offers school leavers an alternative to traditional Further Education.

The open evening for students, parents and guardians is being held at St James Park on Thursday 29 March at 6.30pm.

Staff from Exeter City’s Football in the Community Trust will be on hand to give a presentation about the course and answer any questions. There will also be a short film shown featuring students who enrolled on the course in 2011 talking about their positive experiences.

Exeter City FC’s Futsal Scholarship launched in September 2011, with more than 30 students taking part in the course which combines education with practical Futsal training.

Scholars also play in a Football League Futsal League, competing on a weekly basis against other professional football clubs, including Plymouth Argyle, Cardiff City, AFC Bournemouth, Southampton and Portsmouth.

Current Futsal student Calum Finnimore said: “I’m really enjoying the Futsal Scholarship, especially playing competitively against other teams in the league. I don’t really like being in a classroom and prefer doing more practical things, so the Futsal Scholarship is the perfect way of continuing my education but in a way I can really enjoy. I would definitely recommend the course, as its great fun and will give me lots of options for a career in sport or going on to university.”

On completion of the Futsal Scholarship, students will achieve a Level 3 BTEC National Extended Diploma in Sport, which is the equivalent of 3 A Levels and is recognised by Higher Education institutes as well as employers.

The fully-funded scholarship is open to boys and girls who will be ages 16 or 17 when the course starts in September 2012.

Jamie Vittles, Exeter City FC’s Football in the Community Trust Manager added: “Futsal is an exciting, fast-paced game that is played all over the world and is credited by top football players like Lionel Messi and Cesc Fabregas as being key to their development. The course gives young players the chance to develop their tactical, physiological and social skills, as well as leading to a BTEC qualification.”
