Louise GoodwinMARCELO Rauth’s ability to read the game has earned him a spot on the Australian futsal team.
Marcelo, 12, was selected after a top performance for NSW at the 2012 National Futsal Championship last month.
The defender said he did not know Australian selectors were at the recent tournament and couldn’t believe he had made the under-13 team.
“My sister came to my school and told me the good news,” he said. “It was a big shock. Although I’ve played soccer for eight years, this is my first year playing futsal.”
The Miller Technology High School year 7 student will take the court on the team’s tour of Malaysia in late November.
Marcelo said he would try to develop his skills and try new game plays in the lead-up to and during the tour.
``I take on board what the coaches say and try to incorporate it into my game, which makes me play better,’’ he said.
``You get more opportunity to have the ball in futsal, so it improves ball control and shot accuracy.’‘
The Cartwright resident said he hoped an individual or business would sponsor his trip.
``I had no idea I would even play for the state, so I am over the moon to make the Australian team,’’ he said.
"Not many people in our area get an opportunity to play and it would be good for the neighbourhood to know a kid like me made it to an Australian futsal team."
