Czech football’s top official wants backing from world football’s governing body, FIFA, for the Czech Republic to host the world futsal championships in 2016.

The Czech ambition to host the championships was one of the subjects discussed by Czech Football Association (FACR) chairman Miroslav Pelta and FIFA president Sepp Blatter on Monday.

The Czech association bid unsuccessfully to stage the world championships this year but the final choice went to Thailand. The Czech national men’s team must beat Slovenia in a two-leg play-off at the end of March and start of April to become one of the 24 teams making the final in November. The Czech Republic got to the play-offs by topping their qualification group.

The current futsal world champions are Brazil, who hosted the 2008 event and beat Spain in the final. Those two countries have won all the world championships since they were launched in 1989. The best Czech performance so far was a third place in the UEFA European Championships in 2010.

FACR chairman Miroslav Pelta last week visited UEFA’s Swiss headquarters to press the Czech Republic’s claims to host a European under 21 final.

Futsal is played indoors on a smaller pitch between teams of five with a ball slightly smaller, and less bouncy, than a normal football.
