STL TodayArea teams earn trophies in futsal nationalsThursday, February 23, 2012Nearly 110 youth teams from around the country competed last weekend in the U.S. Futsal Nationals, with several St. Louis teams taking the top prize in their divisions.
The tournament was held in Overland Park, Kan., with many teams advancing automatically from regional events that were held in St. Louis and throughout the country.
In the Boys U16 Premier division, AVFC Premier Black won the championship, defeating the DCFA BU16 Boca Jrs. 7-3. Premier Black is made up of members of Avalon FC.
In the U8/9 girls division, local regional winner Panathinaikos U9G Academy team held the BVSC Stars Sun City team to only one goal to win the championship 8-1. The Panathinaikos team went undefeated throughout the tournament.
The Rockers, another Avalon FC team, took the championship in the girls U10 division. The Rockers defeated KC Select Fury 9-3 to win the trophy.
In the girls U11 division, Lou Fusz Elam-Red made it to the championship game undefeated in match play. The team finished in second place, losing to BVSC Stars Cosmos 4-3.
St. Louis squad Re-United took the championship in the girls high school division. The team outscored DCFA GU18 Palmeiras 6-5 to take the top prize.
Other St. Louis teams to participate in the annual event included:
U10 boys, Jr. Red Devils; U12 boys, St. Louis Scott Gallagher-Celtic; U14 boys, GSE Futsal Academy; U15 boys, Avalon and Celtic FC; U16 boys, AVFC Premier Red; high school boys, Lou Fusz-Williams; U14 girls, Panathinaikos U14G Academy.
