Panthers off to roaring start

Only two months into 2012, the North Mississauga Panthers under-14 girls' soccer team has garnered two provincial titles.

The Panthers, consisting of players born in 1998, captured their second straight Ontario Futsal Cup last weekend (Feb. 25-26) at Durham College in Oshawa. The girls competed in the U15 division because there was no U14 category. The club was also victorious at the Ontario Indoor Cup in January.

North Mississauga defeated the Woodbridge Strikers 2-1 to win this year's Ontario Futsal Cup. The Panthers opened the round-robin with a 3-3 tie against Bolton Wanderers and followed with wins of 5-3 over the West Ottawa Warriors and 7-1 over the Unionville Milliken Strikers before losing 3-2 to Woodbridge.

Since 2010, the Panthers have competed at five provincial indoor tournament championship tournaments including the Ontario Indoor Cup from 2010-12 and the Ontario Futsal Cup in 2011-12.

This summer, the Panthers will be gunning for their third-straight Ontario Cup when t hey move outdoors and a spot in the national championships in October.

Members of the team include Brianna Wallbridge, Alana Rossi, Lindsay Burigana, Ana Corkill, Hannah Baillie, Michelle Travassos, Selena Benvenuto, Olivia Di Cristofaro, Rebecca Spratt, Kimberly Loaiza-Ramirez, Gurjeena Jandu, Roselyn Kyeame, Tracy Pizarro-Steffler, Samantha Worthman, Janine Kanji, Dréa Millar, Megan Pedersen, head coach Dean Spokes, assistant coach Jeannie Qubti, trainer Mary Spratt and manager Garth Corkill.
