A makeover for futsal

Three-on-three version set to enthrall fans

FOR those tired of conventional futsal, Milo Cans recently launched an exciting new variation to the game called three-sided futsal at the Taylors University main campus.

The game is played in a circular court where three teams and three goalposts are employed. These three teams will then compete against one another simultaneously with the goal of being the highest scoring team.

The sport also has a number of rule variations compared to conventional futsal, for example there are no goalkeepers in the game, players are not allowed to lift the ball more than two feet above the ground and teams are not allowed to score against the same team twice in a row which makes for an interesting approach to the game.

Three-sided futsal is the result of the Milo Cans Next Game campaign, where Milo Cans encouraged Malaysian youths to make their own rules from ordinary sports.

The online campaign received tremendous feedback from Malaysian youths last year where more than 5,000 entries suggesting a plethora of sports were received.

The Milo Cans Next Game campaign was intended to reach out to Malaysia’s young sporting fraternity by promoting new and positive sports challenges to allow them to enjoy and express themselves in a healthy manner.

Deputy Higher Education minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said the sport provided an exciting new avenue for students to challenge themselves from a sporting perspective.

“The three-sided game does have its own strengths and allure which will appeal to many,” said Saifuddin after officiating the launch of the new sport.

“I feel it is more challenging and forces the players to employ different strategies as they are playing against two teams at one time instead of one in regular futsal.”

Milo Cans will be organising 10 road shows at colleges and universities in the Klang Valley to promote the sport from this week till late April.

Milo Cans will also be organising a series of three-sided futsal tournaments in May, where 81 college and university teams will be competing.

The first leg and second legs, which will be held at the Sports Planet Futsal Complex, Kota Damansara, are slated for May 5-6 and May 12-13 respectively.

Teams that qualify from the first two legs will be able to compete at the grand finals which will be held on May 27 at the Subang Avenue Shopping Complex.
