Villagers’ protest blocks futsal stadium

Friday, 16th Mar 2012

PHUKET: Villagers in the Koh Sireh area yesterday (March 15) succeeded in putting a halt, for the time being, to a plan to build a futsal stadium on a piece of public land they say is used by their community for all sorts of other activities.

A total of 186 people signed a petition opposing the stadium, which was presented today to Dechakanee Leelanon, the Clerk (Palad) of Rassada Municipality.

Chainarong Nujeenseng, one of five leaders of the villagers who went to present the petition to Mr Dechakanee, told The Phuket News that the project was approved by the Municipality at the end of last year without the villagers being aware of it.

When they found out about it, he said, they sent a petition to Governor Tri Augkaradacha, but this apparently had no effect, as it appeared the project was still going ahead.

Yesterday however, Mr Dechakanee promised the villagers that the project would be suspended temporarily and a public hearing would be organised so that local people could hear details and give their opinions.
