Swazi ObserverFutsal schools’ tournament starts today21 March, 2012by
Bodwa MbingoTHE pilot Futsal schools’ tournament featuring 12 schools around the Mbabane/ Manzini corridor will begin today at 1pm.
Futsal is a five-aside indoor soccer game. The games will be played at Zakhele and Coronation Park Courts, announced National Football Association of Swaziland (NFAS)’ Technical Director Bhekisisa ‘Bizzah’ Mkhonta yesterday.
ExpensiveMkhonta explained that they decided to play the games in outside courts instead of indoors because they found it quite expensive to secure indoor venues for the schools.
The participating schools in Group A are Mbabane Central, St Francis, St Mark’s, Lobamba National, St Mary’s and Somnjalose High Schools. These schools will be playing at the Coronation Park. In group B there will be Hillside, Ngwane Park, St Paul’s, St John Bosco, Swazi National and the School for the Deaf and they will play at the Zakhele courts.
EstablishHe explained that they chose to pilot the game in schools before they could establish a national league.
“This is a pilot tournament as we want to introduce the sport in the country.
The above schools sent their representatives to attend a course, where we taught them extensively about the game. We will be adding more schools into the programme as time goes on because our main aim is to have the sport running extensively,” he explained.
TournamentMkhonta added that the girls’ tournament would also start as soon as the boys enter the second round of their tournament.
“We urge even more schools to get ready to play the game, especially the girls,” he added.
