Cody's national Futsal selection

An emerging indoor sport with a growing appeal on the world stage will take one young Port player to Greece in September.

Cody Carroll, 14, from Hunter River High School will compete in the world futsal championships.

The sport, which combines the skills of soccer and condenses it to eight players on an indoor surface, has given Carroll the opportunity to play for his nation.

The youngster was spotted by the Australian national squad coach in Newcastle.

"I was spotted in Newcastle, playing in a team in Newcastle and the national coach was there," he said.

The game follows the similar conventions of soccer, but on a smaller scale with no more than five players each side.

It uses smaller goals and there is no-off side rule.

Carroll will be away 12 days during the event, and will play against eight other nations.

The school's community engagement officer Kerrie Moshage said it was a 'significant achievement' for him as an individual and on behalf of the school.

"He is a real natural," she said.
