KPTV.com - FOX 12Futsal project in northeast Portland gets assist from Timbers, AdidasApr 04, 2012A group trying to build a futsal court in northeast Portland is getting some help from the Portland Timbers and Adidas.
The semi-enclosed futsal court is intended to keep kids safe and off the streets in the area of three, low-income apartment complexes in the Cully neighborhood.
On Tuesday, representatives with Hacienda Community Development said the Timbers have contributed $20,000 and Adidas has tacked on another $5,000 of the $150,000 needed to complete the project. Hacienda representatives said they're hoping for help from the community to reach their fundraising goal.
Jorge Guzman, of Hacienda Community Development, told FOX 12 last month that children often play soccer in a parking lot in the neighborhood, and that the Cully neighborhood is in need of a space for kids.
Futsal is a variation of soccer made up of five-player teams. The sport uses a heavier, low-bounce ball on a basketball size court.
