Gulf Daily NewsLebanon and Jordan book semis berthsMonday, April 09, 2012JORDAN and Lebanon yesterday made it to the semi-finals of the Second Women's West Asian Futsal Championship, being held at Khalifa Sports City's Gym in Isa Town.
In the concluding Group 'B' tie, Jordan suffered a shocking 2-3 defeat to Palestine, who however, failed to qualify after coming third in the group.
All three teams - Jordan, Lebanon and Palestine - finished the group stages with an equal record of six points each, but with the first two teams having a better goal difference.
Caroline Sojene opened the scoring for Palestine after 10 minutes, but Stephanie Al Nabr equalised for Jordan before half-time.
Abeer Al Nahar then gave Jordan their first-ever lead from a free-kick, but the Palestinians roared back to the match and fired twice through Nivene Al Kulaib.
But Palestine's celebrations came to an end later yesterday as Lebanon picked up a resounding 19-0 victory against bottom-of-the-table side Qatar to go through as group runners-up.
The Lebanese girls stamped authority on the match right from the start and took an impressive 11-0 lead at half-time.
Goals from Sara Haider (6), Nancy Tshaline (5), Taghreed Hammad (4), Heba Al Ja'afali, Sara Bakri, Sahar Dabook and Reem Shalhoub, helped Lebanon punch the second and last ticket in the semi-finals.
The semi-finals are scheduled for tomorrow when Jordan take on Group 'A' second-placers Bahrain in a mouth-watering clash, while Iran face Lebanon. The final will be played on Thursday.
