New recruits sought for futsal programme

CHELTENHAM Town's thriving futsal programme will be recruiting 34 new students to begin a two-year scholarship in September.

The first year of the scheme has been a resounding success, with the Robins' two futsal teams performing well in their respective divisions.

The youngsters, who must be aged 16 to 19 years old, will spend eight hours a week training and ten hours a week studying for a BTEC level three extended diploma in sports studies, which is the equivalent of three A-levels, in partnership with Millbook Academy in Gloucester.

The first team compete in the Midlands Division League One, with matches played on Wednesday afternoons, taking on the likes of Swindon Town, Bristol City, Bristol Rovers and Reading.

They are currently top of the table with nine wins from their 12 matches this season.

The second team lie fourth in the Midlands Division League Two.

Home fixtures are played at Bentham Country Club, with all classroom learning taking place at Whaddon Road.

Students also achieve the FA Level One coaching qualification and the Level One futsal refereeing badge.

The current crop of 17 players have performed well on and off the pitch.

Futsal is the fastest growing indoor game in the world, with more than two million players around the globe.

It is played on a smaller pitch than association football, with a weighted ball that places an emphasis in skill and technical ability.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Ronaldinho both credit the skills-based game with making them the players they are today.

It is the only indoor game approved by FIFA and UEFA. Applicants must have at least four GCSEs at grade C or above.
