Samba soccer guru brings Brazilian magic to town

Monday, April 23, 2012

BRAZILIAN soccer expert Janio Cruz brought South American flair to Grimsby for a three-day Futsal coaching course.

Cruz, who has previously worked for the Sheffield and Hallam County Football Association, hosted a technical exhibition for youngsters aged six to 16 at the YMCA, on Peaks Lane.

Equipped with his in-depth knowledge first nurtured in the city of Sao Paulo, Cruz emphasised the importance of ball control and using both feet in the correct situations.

Having travelled around the globe watching FIFA World and European Futsal matches, Cruz came to Lincolnshire with an unrivalled passion for the game and his enthusiasm has already begun to spread.

Grimsby Soccer Club coach, Kevin Bryant, said: "I knew that Janio was a shrewd tactical coach from playing against his Sheffield team when he played there. But, I had never seen him coaching.

"In simple terms, he exceeded my expectations. My head is full of new information and the players and parents also hold Janio in the same high esteem.

"Janio's sessions were at such a high intensity and he never ignored a player. We have had lots of positive comments since his visit. After 30 years of coaching, Janio has forced me to revaluate all my principles."

Grimsby Soccer Club team manager, Matthew Bryant, added: "Janio was brilliant – no wonder Brazil win everything. He made our coaches look slow.

"My under-12 team players were very impressed. It was the best hour of coaching they have experienced and, hopefully, we can get him back for an extended team coaching session."
