South Africa: Futsal National Squad Selection Camp

25 April 2012

The South African Futsal (Indoor Soccer) National Team will take on Zimbabwe in a World Cup qualifier on Saturday, 5 May 2012. The first leg will be played at the Wembley Indoor Sports Complex in Turfontein, south of Johannesburg.

The Futsal National Team will hold a training camp where they have invited five provinces as well as the national team to take part in mini play-offs, which will be used as trials for players. These will be held at the Wembley Indoor Sports Complex from 28 - 29 April 2012.

The players that will be competing for a spot in the national squad have been active in the game of Futsal in their respective provinces, namely Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Free State, KwaZulu Natal, Gauteng, as well as the current 15-member Futsal National Team.

The selected squad will then be used for the qualifiers.

"This selection camp will help us identify more players and establish a larger pool of players for selection into the national squad. I think this will give us more variety in terms of call-ups for the national team," said Allies.

"I will make my final selection based on the talent and skill the players display. They must have a good knowledge and understanding of Futsal. I expect to see agility amongst the players as this mini play-off will serve as preparation for the upcoming qualifiers."

The Futsal National Team will play two international friendly matches against Egypt on the 30th of April and the 2nd of May in preparation for the clash against neighbours Zimbabwe in the qualifiers. The match will take place at the Wembley Indoor Sports Complex.

"Countries like Egypt and Mozambique are ranked above us on the continent. It's always good to put our team to the test against these strong countries that we may be able to learn a lot when competing against them. This will help us grow as we spread the game of Futsal in South Africa," added Allies.

South Africa recently played against Mozambique in two friendly international matches where they lost on both occasions.

The FIFA Futsal World Cup will be held in Thailand from 1-18 November 2012.
