Futsal National Team Gears Up for World Cup Qualifier

29 April 2012

The South African Futsal National Team coach has selected eighteen (18) players that will represent the country in the FIFA Futsal World Cup qualifiers.

This follows a two-day training camp held at the Wembley Sports Complex in Turffontein, south of Johannesburg from 28 - 29 where five provinces held mini play-offs as part of the selection camp.

The five provinces are Mpumalanga, Gauteng, Free State, Limpopo, KwaZulu Natal, with the 15-member Futsal National Team members making up the sixth squad.

National team coach, Quinton Allies says this selection camp was the best possible way to select national team players.

"I am quite excited with the way the selection camp, and I believe this was the best possible way to select this squad. There is a lot of untapped potential around the country and we believe with the players we have selected, this country will be well-represented in the upcoming qualifiers and beyond," said Allies.

"The players played their hearts out to catch the eye, and I must admit there was a lot of inexperienced players but we are hopeful that with the growth of Futsal they will gain the necessary experience. It's work in progress and this was a good start."

The newly-selected national squad will start training at the Wembley Stadium from Monday (30 April 2012) morning.

This will be in preparation for a World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe on Saturday, 5 May 2012. The match will take place at the Wembley Sports Complex.

The South African Futsal National Team will look to be amongst three countries that will represent the continent at the FIFA Futsal World Cup set for Thailand from 1-18 November later this year.
