MIDDLESBROUGH HEAD TO LONDON FOR GRAND FINALSMIDDLESBROUGH FUTSAL Club will this weekend (11th/12th May) be in the capital taking on the nation’s best futsal teams aiming to bring the title back to Teesside.
Boro could become national champions by winning the playoffs, which sees the top two teams from the North, Midlands and South going head to head in two groups of three. The winners will qualify for the UEFA Futsal Cup, which has just seen Barcelona crowned champions at their first attempt.
The Teessiders open their campaign at 12:15pm on 12th May against four time champions Helvecia – a London outfit drawing on the Brazilian community - and follow that up with a game against University runners-up Team Bath at 3:45pm. The final is played by the two group winners on Sunday 13th May at 3pm. Entry is free and there are only 500 seats available!
Manager Damon Shaw is optimistic ahead of the finals.
“We’ve had a great season and the aim at the start was to challenge for the title. We are in the finals now, which gives us that chance. We are up against Helvecia first, which will be a final in itself but one we are looking forward to – they are the benchmark of futsal in England so to be up against them is a great honour and challenge for us.”
“If we play to our strengths and cut out silly mistakes we can win the title. But every team believes that so we need to work hard to make sure we come away with no regrets. We deserve to be here and the fans deserve it too, they have been unreal this season.”
“We have the players that can make a difference, but we are also without two key players in Robbie [Bettson] (knee) and Theo [Furness] who has signed a pro contract in Iceland but we have good depth in the squad and I’ll be looking to the fringe players to come in and do a job.”
