Philip WongMay 12, 2012, SaturdaySIBU: Eighteen teams are in the fray for the men’s section of the inaugural P211 Lanang Sibu Open Futsal championship to be held at Bukit Lima Indoor Stadium starting today at 10am.
Lanang Member of Parliament, Datuk Tiong Thai King will kick off the tournament which is jointly organised by Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) and Sibu Football Association (Sibu FA).
According Sibu FA secretary, Abdul Hajis said six teams are also competing in the ladies’ section in the tournament which will end on Sunday.
“The overwhelming number of teams taking part is testimony to the growing popularity of futsal in Sibu and hopefully, the players will make full use of the opportunity to showcase their talents and skills as well” he said on the event which offers exciting prizes sponsored by LEA Sports Centre.
“There could be more ladies’ teams but due to the players’ other commitments, they could not come up with proper teams to compete with us” he said.
The top two teams in each category will represent Sibu for the Sarawak Futsal Cup to will be held in Kuching from May 25 to 27.
For the men’s category, the champion will get RM1,000 plus a trophy, the first runner-up will get RM700 while the third and fourth winners will each get RM600.
For the Ladies’ category, the champion will get RM500 plus a trophy while the first and second runners-up will each get RM300.
Meanwhile, outstanding players from the 12 teams which competed in this year’s Sibu Football
League cum Sibu FA Cup will be selected to represent Sibu for the coming Sarawak Cup to be held in Miri.
The teams which took part in the two-month event were namely Rimbunan Hijau FC, MPFC, Alauna FC, Sains FC, Singgah Selalu and Sastera Akademi, Cheetah FC, QLA5110, V8 FC, PBB, Sinar Suria and Exodust FC.
This year’s event has so far registered 18 goals being scored in last weekend’s games and more are expected to come in this weekend’s matches to will be held at Tun Ahmad Zaidi Stadium starting 4pm.
With the champion’s prize money of RM3,000 and the first runner-up to receive RM2,000, only the top eight teams will qualify for this year’s Sibu FA Cup tournament that kicks off at the end of the league.
To be played on knock out basisi, the champion of the Sibu FA Cup will get RM1,000 cash while the first runner-up will bag RM500.
