Excess RP make it three titles in a row

Sunday, May 27, 2012

Excess RP Bidnija have been crowned futsal champions for the third year running after winning the second play-off in the final against Naxxar Motors at the Corradino Pavilion on Friday.

Excess had to come from behind, goalkeeper Matthew Xerx-en taking centre-stage with a last-gasp equaliser.

The game ended 2-2 and Excess went on to beat Naxxar Motors 4-2 in the penalty shoot-out. Excess had won the first play-off 5-3.

The championship success crowned another excellent season for Excess RP Bidnija who finished top of the league, losing only one game in the process. Excess also had the best goal average.

The link-up between title holders ZC Excess and RP Bidnija, prior to the team’s commitments in the UEFA Futsal Cup at the start of this season, proved fruitful with player-coach Florin Anton, the MFA futsal player of the year for the past two seasons, once again leading the side, backed by club president Mario Vella and team manager Nathaniel Jones.

Excess RP Bidnija will now seek to win the double as they face Paola Downtown in the final of the KO on June 4.

Futsal Malta Association (FMA), headed by president Donald Spiteri, will take over the organisation of the national league as from next season.

Member clubs have until June 15 to declare their intention to participate in the coming futsal league.

The FMA is affiliated to the Malta FA.
