The Borneo PostBetong set to be futsal powerhouseby
Matthew T. UmpangMay 29, 2012, TuesdayKUCHING: After emerging champions of the Sarawak Cup futsal competition last Sunday, Betong Division Football Association (BDFA) president Nelson Kloni Kanang was full of praise and proud of the accomplishment of his teams in the tournament.
Betong division’s men and women teams won in their respective categories.
According to Nelson, he never doubted the capability of both teams in the competition and has always believed that Betong will do well in the prestigious competition.
“This is a perfect Gawai Dayak present to all of the people of Betong. We will be celebrating the success and we are very proud of their achievements,” he added.
Nelson pointed out that the achievement of Betong’s men and women futsal team are an important part of the division’s sports history since Betong’s installation as a division in 2002.
He continued that as the youngest and smallest division in Sarawak, it was indeed a great achievement deserved to be put on record.
Last Sunday’s triumph in the Sarawak Cup was not the division’s first as their women’s team won the cup for the first time in 2011.
The team, represented by the Betong Bankers club, went on to represent Sarawak at the national meet on the same year.
“As president of BDFA, I hope that our football team will emulate their victory in the upcoming Piala Sarawak this October. We aim to be Sarawak’s powerhouse in futsal and football,” enthused Nelson.
He also believed that the double victory last Sunday was a mark of a new glory era not only in futsal but also other sports in Betong.
As a Betong native himself, he would love to see Betong becoming a benchmark for others to emulate.
“You could do it if you work hard. We will continue to work hard and win more honours for the division and hopefully produce good sportsmen and sportswomen for Sarawak and Malaysia,” he added.
Last Sunday, 16 teams competed at the Sarawak Cup.
Betong was represented by team Velocity in the men’s category while defending champions Betong Bankers took part in the women’s category.
The tournament was jointly organised by the Sarawak Futsal and Beach Soccer Development Committee of the Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) headed by the charismatic Razali Dolhan while the organising chairman was Haji Fuad Mohammad Sapri.
The finals took place at Stadium Perpaduan.
