Hani Al-AwadhDUBAI, May 29 (KUNA) -- Kuwait indoor football team qualified, for the
first time ever, for the 2012 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Thailand despite their 2-3 loss to Australia in AFC Futsal qualifiers in Dubai.
Kuwait, finishing as top-fifth ranked country in the AFC Futsal
Championship, will join defending champion Iran, host country Thailand, Australia and Japan to the FIFA Futsal World Cup.
Iran defeated Uzbekistan with a half dozen against three, while Thailand overcome Lebanon 5-3. Japan completed the semi-final round with a 1-0 victory over Kyrgyzstan.
Chairman of Kuwait Football Association (KFA) Sheikh Talal Fahad Al-Sabah, speaking to KUNA after the clash with Australia, said Kuwait succeeded in qualifying for the FIFA Futsal World Cup 30 years after Kuwait football team qualified for the World Cup in 1982.
Sheikh Talal, dedicating the win to the Kuwaiti leadership and Kuwaiti
people, thanked the players and coaching staff for this achievement.
He termed the victory as historic, with Kuwait as the only Arab country from Asia in the FIFA Futsal World Cup. Kuwait Futsal team director Kamel Al-Shammari said the qualification was a
result of hard work, done by amateur players.
Al-Shammari thanked the Kuwaiti fans who stood behind their team throughout the tournament.
