Costa Rica Futsal Team takes pair friendlies against El Salvador

Costa Rican Futsal Team won a pair of friendlies against visiting El Salvador over the weekend, in preparation for the CONCACAF Futsal Championship next month in Guatemala.

Forward Michael Cordoba and defender Luis Alejandro Paniagua each scored twice to lead the Ticos to a 10:0 win in the first-ever meeting against the Cuscatlecos in the opening friendly at Heredia’s Gimnasio del Colegio Claretiano on Friday (7 June).

The Costa Rica’s 10-margin was the most scored since it defeated Haiti 13:0 during the group stage of the 2008 CONCACAF Tournament.

Defenders Jorge Arias, Nestor Daniel Carrera, Jean Marie Jimenez, Christopher Molina, Diego Alonso Vargas and forward Yefrid Ruiz all scored for the Ticos in the 6:2 win in the second encounter two days later (9 June) at San José’s Gimnasio Nacional. Defender Hector Alex Bernal had both of El Salvador goals, which were the first for the team since 2004.

Costa Rica is scheduled to host Canada just before the Maple Leafs face the Cuscatlecos in a two-game playoff on 28, 29 June at Guatemala City’s Domo Polideportivo.

The winner of the Canada-El Salvador series will join Panama, USA and hosts in Group A at the 2012 CONCACAF Championship from 2-8 July at the Domo Polideportivo that also has Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico and St. Kitts & Nevis in Group B.

The eight-team tournament will qualify for the first time four nations to the FIFA Futsal World Cup Thailand 2012.
