Vietnam futsal needs changes: Gargelli

Tuesday, 03 July 2012

Kuwait City: Thai Son Nam coach Sergio Gargelli stressed on the need of structural chances if Vietnamese national team or club want to progress in the continental futsal.

Thai Son Nam shipped in 14 goals in first two matches and are virtually out of the ongoing AFC Futsal Club Championship with a match to spare.

Gargelli, who is also the head coach of Vietnam national futsal team, believes in the potential of the country where futsal is played and followed overwhelmingly.

“Vietnamese love futsal and they are a good competitive side in Asean region but when we go outside Asean region we struggle because we are physically inferior than other Asian countries,” he told www.the-afc.com.

Despite playing good futsal, Vietnam failed to make it into the finals of the 2012 AFC Futsal Championship held in Dubai. Vietnam were defeated 2-1 in the extra time against Indonesia in the semi-final of the Asean qualifiers and failed to secure the passage to the finals when Australia downed them 4-3 in the dramatic third-place play off.

“There are two ways to move forward for the Vietnamese club and national futsal. “We must create a league which is well spread in the country with increased number of teams which will maximise the number of matches in the season,” the Florence-born coach said.

“There is another way which is about working at the elite level. Since futsal is played all over Vietnam, a massive scouting would give us a pool of 25-30 physically strong players whom we can train to make good futsal players later. For me personally, this is more viable,” added.

Thai Son Nam were qualified for this debut campaign in the AFC Futsal Club Championship final after finishing second in Zone two qualification behind Thailand’s GH Bank to who they lost 1-0 in the final.
