www.aseanfootball.comINDONESIA CONFIRM THIRD BEST RANKINGKUANTAN, Malaysia (July 6, 2003) - Indonesia certified they are the third best team in the Asean Futsal Championship by beating Cambodia 5-3 in the match for third and fourth placing at the Sukpa Stadium here today.
The Indonesians had beaten Cambodians 7-5 in a one round league earlier in the tournament and looked set to replicate that victory with Andri Irawan giving the lead on six minutes.
But the hard running Cambodians equalized on 11 minutes through Chan Veasna who turned in a pass by Kao Kiri.
An upset win by the Cambodians was in prospect after they had taken a 2-1 lead on 13 minutes through Kim Chanbunrith and held it until halftime.
But Cambodia lacked drive in the second half and in the lull, Indonesia, in moves that were slower but more precise, drew level through Vennard Victor on 22 minutes and then fell behind 2-3 as Kao Kiri of Cambodia netted off a corner-kick on 31 minutes.
But in an immediate response Victor again drew Indonesia level on 32 minutes and a minute later Andrian Asuri beat Cambodian substitute goalkeeper Vannry Panchak with a long shot.
Asuri again tested Panchak with a long shot on 37 minutes that had the goalkeeper caught flatfooted. But this time the Cambodians could not stage another recovery as they ran out of steam.
Indonesian assistant coach, Azaria Urias Rahankanthan, said: “Both teams were tired but our team managed to dredge up some reserve of fighting spirit. Cambodia have been improving with each match in this tournament. But I think we just had a little more in fighting spirit.”
Cambodian assistant coach, Tuy Bunhoeun, said: “We played well in the first half. Our energy was good in the first half but in the second we were tired out and could not sustain our initial good play.”
WIDE GULF OF THAILANDKUANTAN, Malaysia (July 6, 2003) - Thailand once again exposed the gulf in technique between itself and Malaysia with an emphatic 4-0 win over Malaysia in the final of the Asean Futsal Championship at the Sukpa Stadium here today.
The chasm in technique and tactics between the defending champions and the next best team in Asean was reflected not just by the number of goals the Thais scored without reply but also in their hitting the post five times and reducing Malaysia to only one shot at the Thai goal.
The Malaysians were not so much bereft of ideas as devoid of the technique to execute them. In contrast, the Thais through sheer superiority in technique were able to virtually make every offensive move tell in a shot at goal.
To be sure the Thais did not have too many shots at goals. But when they did they converted four and hit the post five times. Thailand led 3-0 at halftime.
The Thais had beaten Malaysia 6-1 in the earlier league encounter in this tournament. But though their victory margin today was smaller, their superiority was greater.
This was the consequence of technical and tactical superiority that had the Malaysians reduced to passing the ball among them rather aimlessly for want of a penetrative thrust.
The Thai scorers were Joe Nuengkord (3rd and 6th) and Anucha Munjarern (10th and 25th minute penalty
Thai team manager, Adisak Benjasiriwan, said: “My team were very disciplined in sticking to our tactical plan. Throughout the match they showed good discipline in sticking to that plan. Their performance was a good display of disciplined adherence to tactics.”
Malaysian manager, Bahwandi Hiralal, said: “The Thai game was so tight that our team could not execute any moves. We were given no room to play and were shut out of the game.”
