World Inter-University Futsal Championship 2003

QUALIFICATION RESULTS

Antwerp 2003 WIU Futsal Round 1 (21 - 23 March)

"Faculdade Medicina do Porto" takes the first ticket to the finals

All teams, who arrived on Friday during the day, went into the city of Antwerp for a quiet night out or a stroll around the block to stretch their legs, knowing that the days ahead would way heavily on the physical condition of their bodies.

As expected, the first games immediately showed that the level of the players was very high. A new comer in Futsal, Sydväst Polytechnic, proved themselves worthy to compete amongst other teams who were more experienced.

After the games on Saturday it was clear that the clash of the Titans would be between Belgrade University, ACMT Dubrovnik and Fac. Medicina do Porto. A won direct confrontation between Belgrade University and ACMT Dubrovnik could have decided the direct placement of Belgrade for the finals, but their draw proved otherwise.

The final between ACMT Dubrovnik and Faculdade Medicina do Porto was of high standard to which both teams played more defensively than in previous matches. Beautiful combinations and tactics where shown, but a winner could not be appointed at the end of the match, which resulted in 2 – 2. So needless to say that a nail biting penalty shoot out was necessary to appoint a winner. Most penalties where well placed, but unfortunately the penalty taken by the goalkeeper of Dubrovnik was stopped by Porto. The final shoot out ended in 6 – 7 and appointed Porto as the first qualified team to compete again in October in order to become World Inter University Champion Futsal 2003.

Round Report
This weekend we have seen some nail biting games up until the last minute and it’s fair to say that the level of all teams during this qualification round was high, providing exiting games. As you can see in the section "results", lots of games ended equal or with the narrowest of goal difference which resulted in the fact that it was actually anybodies game and that all teams had a good chance to win.

The game of Hogeschool Holland against Ben Gurion Univ. of the Negev (Peace Team), was such a game. Throughout the game both teams kept going, scoring on turns and it was only in the last 20 seconds of the game that Hogeschool Holland found the back of the nets of Ben Gurion University taking the victory home which immediately provided them with a second difficult game against the finalist of this competition round Tech. Universiteit Eindhoven.

The final between the Techn. University of Eindhoven and the Universidad of Sevilla was also a tight game. In the first half it looked like Eindhoven had taken matters into hand and where playing smoothly with a good lead. But in the second half things were changing and Universidad de Sevilla came along side. In the last minutes both teams still had some scoring opportunities but in the end the qualifier needed to be decided through penalties, in which the stand off ended in 1 – 3 in favour of Universidad de Sevilla.

Although all teams deserve credit for their achievements and sportive performances, there is one team which we would like to put in the picture, namely the "Ben Gurion University of the Negev", better known as the peace team.

The futsal "Peace Team" is a joint team of Palestinian and Israeli players, who play together in order to promote the message of peace and co-existence amongst cultures and students, emphasizing a peaceful alternative to the currently reality in the Middle East through sports.

The Peace Team was established in January 2002 in a cooperative effort between "The Peres Centre for Peace" and "Ben Gurion University" who met each other on a weekly basis for training sessions . In January 2003 the Peace Team entered the Israeli Futsal League and ended up winning their League Championship at the end of the season. All their matches were broadcasted on Israeli Sports Channel 5 and provided the general public with a much needed inspiring image of Palestinians and Israelis coexisting and working together in a positive manner.

After this success the Peace Team took on their chances in the World Inter University Futsal Championship in Antwerp 2003 of ISFF. Of course ISFF was honoured with their participation and proud to be part of such an inspiring experience in which you see that sport has no boundaries.

If you could have seen the reaction and spontaneous loud standing ovation of the other competing teams at the end of the competition round, a sigh of relief would have shivered through your body. Because at that point you realise that the future is looking bright and in good hands with the students of today, becoming the people of tomorrow.

We all wish the "Peace Team" of the Peres Centre and Ben Gurion University good luck in their future goals.

Participation of the "Peace Team" in the WUFC Antwerp 2003

Peace Team already showed from beginning of 2003 a blue print of "Road map to peace" between Palestinians and Israelis through sports.
