The SA Indoor Football Association has announced that the new national league will kick off this weekend despite unsecured sponsorship and television coverage.
Durban's
Thekwini City meet
Msunduzi Eagles of Pietermaritzburg in the 10-team National Futsal League opener at the University of Durban-Westville tonight (8pm).
Tomorrow sees
Tshwane City take on
Mpumalanga Aces at Technikon Pretoria (4pm) and
Msunduzi Hotspurs face
Free State Warriors at the YMCA in Pietermaritzburg (8pm).
"The idea of establishing the league started in late 1999 and, after considerable effort and overcoming numerous obstacles, the association is in the final stages of fulfilling the need and vacuum that exists in South African football," said association president
Poobie Govindasamy.
Thekwini City will play their second game next Saturday against FS Warriors at UDW (3pm) while the two teams from Cape Town,
Titans and
Cavaliers, will start their fixtures on October 4.
Fixtures for the two other sides from Gauteng -
Vaal Rangers and
Mogale City - have yet to be confirmed.
Each team will play a total of 18 games (home and away basis).
The association is an affiliate of the SA Football Association and is currently being run from the offices of Govindasamy's law firm in Pietermaritzburg.
Efforts to get commercial sponsors and television backing are ongoing.
