The victory on Monday morning is a triumphant beginning for the Vietnamese team considered underdogs before the game.
Vietnam gave an impressive performance in the first half of the clash with 20-year-old striker Minh Tri scoring the first goal in the 19th minute.
Guatemala equalized in the second half thanks to a goal by Wanderley.
Then, in the 27th and 28th minutes, Minh Tri scored two consecutive goals, making the score 3-1 to the Vietnamese team.
The Guatemalans managed to net their second goal two minutes later, before Vietnam were given a penalty kick after the ball touched the hand of a Guatemalan player in the penalty area in the 39th minute.
Vietnamese striker Van Vu slotted home, ending the game with a 4-2 victory for Bruno Garcia Formoso’s men.
This is the first time that Vietnam have qualified for the FIFA Futsal World Cup, and the fourth time for Guatemala.
Vietnam rank 42nd worldwide, 18 places below their Guatemalan rivals.
The victory over Guatemala was essential for Vietnam to advance to the next round of the championship.
A total of 24 teams qualified for the tournament in Colombia. They will compete in six groups of four from September 10 to October 1.
