FFA cut all Futsalroos funding for the next twelve months

July 4, 2017

Australian futsal has been dealt a hammer blow with the Football Federation Australia (FFA) suspending funding for the Futsalroos national team program for the 2017/18 financial year.

As a result, the Futsalroos will not be competing in the 2017 AFF Futsal Championships in Vietnam in November, which means they will not have the opportunity to qualify for the 2018 AFC Futsal Championship.

The silver-lining for the Australian national team is that neither of these competitions acts as a qualifier for the 2020 FIFA Futsal World Cup.

The FFA sent a letter out to the Futsalroos staff and players today (the 4th of July) to notify them of the cuts to their program, which it described as part of “significant funding cuts across all national team programs.”

“I write to you with regards to the Futsalroos program for the 2017/18 financial year. Unfortunately, due to budget restraints across the business the decision has been made by the Football Federation Australia (FFA) board to temporarily suspend the futsal program for the next 12 months,” the letter, sent out by an FFA representative, said.

“I have no doubt that this decision will be met with disappointment but I hope that you can be understanding of the reasons behind the decision.”

The FFA has promised to continue funding for the national team program from the 2018/19 season and beyond.

This news comes just one week after it was revealed that the FFA run national league the F-League will not be running this summer as previously touted by people close to the league.
