The chapines began the competition at the Anaheim Convention Center with a 9:3 victory over the tricolor, while in the second encounter of the evening the stars & stripes defeated the maple leafs 5:3.
Guatemala (1-0-0, 3 Points) jumped out to a 4:0 lead in the opening eight minutes of the game with tallies by defender Jaime Estuardo De León (5th), midfielder Reinaldo Rosales Acevedo (6th), forward Marlon Noj (7th, 8th), until forward Carlos Alberto Ramírez got Mexico (0-1-0, 0 Points) on the board for a 4:1 score.
After midfielder Carlos Eduardo Estrada Ramírez made it 5:1 just before the end of the first half, chapines outscored the tricolor 4:2 in the second half for their sixth consecutive victory over Mexico in Futsal international play. The last time the tricolor defeated the chapines was on 7 September 1996, 3:1.
In the second match, midfielder Steve Butcher gave the USA (1-0-0, 3 Points) a 1:0 lead in the third minute of the first half, but Canada (0-1-0, 0 Points) equalized (1:1) six minutes later with a goal by midfielder Steffan Holdt.
After forward Joel Shanker (USA) and Geordie Lyall (CAN) exchanged goals, defender Pat Morris scored just as the first half concluded to give the stars & stripes the edge 3:2.
Shanker increased the USA lead to 4:2 in the 22nd minute of the second half, but forward Jason Jordan answered a few seconds later and cut the deficit to 4:3.
Forward Don D’Ambra closed out the scoring with five minutes remaining as the USA held on to a 5:3 victory.
The quadrangular event continues on Saturday (6 December), at the Anaheim Convention Center, with Mexico taking on Canada in the first game at 18:30, while the second encounter features Guatemala meeting the USA at 20:15.
