FC Strathroy Benfica Wins Ontario Provincial Title

KITCHENER, Ontario (3-17-03) - At the Ontario Provincial Futsal Championship for clubs held March 13-14 in Kitchener, FC Strathroy Benfica won the provincial title against FC Toronto Twister, which finished second overall.

The game was very tight and finished 6-6 through one overtime period. Strathroy won finally on a penalty shoot out. Both clubs earned the right to participate at the Canadian Futsal Club Championship next April in the Province of Québec.

The Strathroy club is composed of many Portuguese, while Toronto Twister is mostly Brazilian. Another club, Toronto FC, is mainly composed of South Americans. Among them is an international player from the National Futsal Team of Uruguay and Nacional of Montevideo, Alvaro Yaques.

At the second stage of the Québec Provincial Futsal Championship for clubs held over the same weekend, newcomer FC Bell/CL Activewear of Montérégie created a surprise by defeating every club in its group. FC Granby, lead by national futsal team player Jocelyn Roy, also qualified for the Québec final four, which will take place on April 3-4.
