Comments by Steve Harris: Winning start for Split MNK Split 1700 were deserved 2-0 winners over AS Roma on Monday in the opening match of the first UEFA Futsal Cup. Solid defence The Croatian team scored twice in the second half to take an early lead in Group A. Goals from Pjer Malvasija and Alen Delpont, ironically both former Roma players, secured the victory, but for a long time it looked as if the tournament curtain-raiser in Lisbon would end goalless.
Plenty of flair Roma had plenty of flair, particularly through their two imports, Brazilian Ivan Alves and Argentinian Leandro Miguel Planas, but lacked an end product. The South American duo looked dangerous whenever they got the ball near the Split goal but they were up against a solid defence who gave nothing away.
Disciplined display Aside from an early booking for Ivica Podrug, who was commanding throughout for his team, it was a disciplined display from Split. Their patience finally told with barely eight minutes remaining. Nikola Tomicic surged down the left, leaving two Roma players in his wake. He slipped the ball inside to Ivica Osibov, who in turn found Malvasija three metres out. Roma goalkeeper Massimo Rinaldi could do nothing about Malvasijas forceful shot and Split never looked back.
Victory sealed Split captain Delpont sealed victory three seconds from time by shooting into an empty net from distance with Roma having sacrificed their keeper in the hope of gaining an extra-man advantage. Split march on but the Italian team, who saw Massimo Riscino hit the bar after five minutes, find themselves needing a win in their next match to keep their qualification hopes alive. ----------------------------------------------------------------

Comments by Steve Harris: Sporting too strong for Gracanica Monday 25 February 2002 Sporting Clube de Portugal recovered from the shock of going a goal behind in the first minute to triumph 3-1 over MNK Kaskada Gracanica.
Shock lead The UEFA Futsal Cup hosts were stunned after 34 seconds when Muamer Orucevic prodded home from close range after a well-worked move by the team from Bosnia-Herzegovina. Sporting coach Paulo Fernandes acknowledged his side were tense going into the game in front of a lively home crowd at Lisbon's Pavilhco Atlbntico. "We were nervous before the match because of the importance of the competition," he said. "Then conceding a goal in the first play was disturbing." Bibi double Despite spurning a number of chances in the first half, particularly Bibi, Sporting refused to give up. They had to work hard for their openings because of Gracanica's deep defending but eventually found the breakthrough. Bibi smashed home a shot from the right-hand side and followed it up with a similar second less than a minute later. Confident finish Goncalo Alves wrapped up the win with a confident finish on a breakaway as the Bosnia-Herzegovina side tried to pull a goal back. Gracanica were always a threat throughout but could find no way through after their quick start, which their coach Nesib Okic acknowledged had been carefully planned in training.
