Grenada, Guyana, Surinam and Trinidad & Tobago post wins at 2004 CFU Tournament

21.4.04 - Grenada, Guyana, Surinam and the host Trinidad & Tobago all posted wins at the 2004 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Preliminary Futsal Qualification Tournament at the University of the West Indies in St. Augustine on Tuesday evening.
Three goals by Atkinson Neckles and two more by Ricky Morris helped Grenada (1-1-0, 3 Points) earn their first victory in the inaugural CFU Futsal event with a 6:3 win over Puerto Rico (0-2-0, 0 Points) in Group A action, while in another match, Ako James scored the game-winner with four minutes remaining as Trinidad & Tobago (2-0-0, 6 Points) posted a hard-fought 4:3 victory over Netherlands Antilles (1-1-0, 3 Points).

In Group B, three goals by Gino Brandon paced Surinam (2-0-0, 6 Points) to a 15:1 triumph over Turks & Caicos Islands (0-2-0, 0 Points), three tallies by Travis Grant led Guyana (2-0-0, 6 Points) to an 11:2 victory over St. Vincent & The Grenadines (0-2-0, 0 Points).

The 2004 CFU Futsal Preliminary event, which is sponsored by the Hindu Credit Union Group of Companies, concludes first round play on Wednesday evening at the University of the West Indies with the following match-ups: Turks & Caicos Islands vs. St. Vincent & The Grenadines (17:00), Puerto Rico vs. Netherlands Antilles (18:00), Surinam vs. Guyana (19:00) and Trinidad & Tobago vs. Grenada (20:00).

The top team from each group will advance to the 2004 CONCACAF Futsal Final Round Qualification scheduled for July in Costa Rica and will also play for the Caribbean title on 23 April. The two runners-up from group play will meet for a third-place play-off game to claim the final CFU berth in the CONCACAF tournament.

The three Caribbean representatives will join three qualifiers from the North/Central Preliminary Series, along with Cuba and the host Costa Rica, in the eight-team CONCACAF Final Round. This event will qualify two CONCACAF nations to the 2004 FIFA Futsal World Championship to be held in Chinese Taipei from 21 November - 5 December.
