USA takes first-leg of Preliminary Futsal North/Central Zone Series 3 over Honduras

18.5.04 - The USA Futsal team opened the 2004 CONCACAF Preliminary North/Central Zone Qualifying Series 3 with a 5:1 victory in the first-leg over visiting Honduras at the US Cellular Arena in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Tuesday evening.
The stars & stripes jumped out to a 2:0 at halftime, with consecutive tallies by Lee Edgerton and Johnny Torres in the 6th and 11th minutes, respectively.

The USA took a 3:0 edge with a goal by Greg Howes in the 21st minute of second half, but the catrachos got on the board (3:1) a few seconds later with a tally by Luis Martínez.

The stars & stripes closed out the scoring with goals by Joel Shanker and Danny Kelly in the 26th and 35th minutes, respectively in the 5:1 final.

Both teams will meet again at the US Cellular Arena in the second-leg of the North/Central Futsal Preliminary Series 3 scheduled for Thursday, 20 May at 19:00.

The Honduras/USA winner and the two victors of the other North/Central Preliminary Series, (Series 1 - Canada/Panama, Series 2 - El Salvador/Mexico), will advance to the 2004 CONCACAF Futsal Final Round Qualification from 23-31 July, along with Cuba, three more qualifiers from the Caribbean Football Union (Guyana, Surinam, Trinidad & Tobago) and the host, Costa Rica.

The eight-team CONCACAF Final Round will qualify two nations to the 2004 FIFA Futsal World Championship, to be held in Chinese Taipei from 21 November - 5 December.
