USA continues unbeaten futsal streak against Mexico

The USA Futsal team continued its unbeaten streak against CONCACAF rival Mexico after posting a victory and a draw in international friendlies over the weekend at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California.
The stars & stripes won the first game 3:1 on 9 July, with goals by John Ball, Dewayne Gilpatrick and Brian Soell, while Victor Huerta had the only tally for the tricolor in the loss.

The second encounter the following day ended in a 3:3 tie. Mexico jumped out to a 3:2 halftime lead with two goals from Edson Lince and another by Alberto Montiel, while the USA responded with first half tallies from Sean Bowers and Joel Shanker.

Matt Tanzani got the equalizer for the in the second half for the stars & stripes as they extended their unbeaten futsal streak against the tricolor to six international matches.

Both teams will compete at the 2004 CONCACAF Futsal Championship from 23-31 July at the Palacio de los Deportes in Herédia, Costa Rica.

Mexico has been placed in Group A along with Surinam, Trinidad & Tobago and the defending champion, Costa Rica, while the USA is in Group B with Cuba, Guyana and Panama.

The eight-team CONCACAF Final Round will qualify two nations to the 2004 FIFA Futsal World Championship, to be held in Chinese Taipei from 21 November – 5 December.

CONCACAF has previously staged two Futsal qualifiers for the FIFA World Championships, in 1996 and 2000. Six teams participated in the 1996 CONCACAF event in Guatemala that was won by the USA. 1996 Results Four years later, eight squads took part in the tournament in Costa Rica, which was claimed by the host. 2000 Results
